Is your smile broken, damaged, or unsightly? Do you have some cosmetic dental issues which you would like to resolve? At Hatch Family Dentistry in Tempe, Arizona, our experienced and skilled cosmetic dentists, Dr. Konkle and Dr. Hatch, provide various solutions for aesthetic problems such as chips, fractures, decay, and irregularities in shape and size. One of the most popularly used cosmetic treatments in dentistry today is the porcelain veneer.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers have become well-known because a number of celebrities have undergone smile makeovers. Veneers provide a quick and effective way of correcting aesthetically unpleasant teeth without having to make major adjustments. Although they may be seen as purely aesthetic solutions, veneers can also be used for functional purposes, such as protecting and preserving damaged teeth.

Veneers come in various materials, but porcelain is the ideal choice for those looking for a natural look. Porcelain can be colored to exactly match the existing teeth. It is also a very strong material which is used in various medical prosthetics, not just in dentistry. Veneers are a great alternative to crowns and dental bonding.

When are Porcelain Veneers Used?

A porcelain veneer can be beneficial for patients who:

  • Would like to adjust the appearance of a misshapen tooth;
  • Want to cover up a single discolored tooth due to internal decay or root canal treatment;
  • Need to protect damaged teeth without having to get a full dental crown;
  • Are looking for a natural cosmetic solution for inclined teeth or gaps; or,
  • Have extensively decayed teeth.

In some cases, veneers and crowns can be interchangeable, but veneers require less trimming of teeth and can preserve more of the natural tooth material. Crowns provide coverage and protection for all sides of the tooth.

How are Porcelain Veneers Placed?

A veneer is manufactured in a dental laboratory by a dental technician. The process involves careful planning and execution to provide the best effects. The dentist will first prepare the tooth for the veneer by trimming around 0.5 mm of the front tooth surface. Once this is done, an impression will be taken to fit the veneer perfectly over the trimmed tooth.

During the waiting period, a temporary cover may be given to protect the tooth and avoid sensitivity. It may take a couple of weeks to finish the veneer. Once it has been delivered to our dental office, we will call you back in for a follow-up appointment.

On your follow-up, the temporary restoration will be removed and the tooth will be prepared for bonding. The veneer will first be fitted over the tooth so the dentist can see how the final result looks. The color can still be adjusted by mixing the cement. Your dentist will make sure that the veneer has the best fit and exact color to match your teeth.

The veneer will be installed with dental cement. It is cured by a special light to hasten the adhesion and make the prosthetic stick permanently. After installation, you will receive some care instructions and you may resume regular daily activities afterwards.

Benefits of Using Porcelain Veneers

When you get porcelain veneers, you will achieve the following benefits:

  1. Perfect fit. Veneers are fabricated from the impression of your actual tooth, giving them an excellent fit and coverage. Before installation, dentists (the dentist) can still make small adjustments on the restoration, allowing them to really optimize the fit.
  2. Aesthetic appeal. Veneers are virtually invisible and perfectly suited for the patient’s mouth and face. No one will notice that your teeth are covered in veneers and you will end up with a more beautiful smile.
  3. Minimal removal of tooth material. Since veneers are very thin, the tooth doesn’t need extensive trimming and preparation to accommodate them. This preserves more of the natural tooth material, unlike dental crowns.
  4. Protection against decay. Porcelain is not susceptible to bacterial infection since it is only an artificial compound. It can effectively protect the tooth from further decay, preserving the tooth for long-term.
  5. Long-lasting results. Veneers are not temporary solutions. They can last for many years, even a lifetime if cared for properly. They are surely worth the investment.
